Everyone must have been angry for an emotional outburst as a result of disappointment, fear, being offended or hurt. Sometimes physical conditions, such as hunger, lack of sleep, or stress, could cause a person to get angry more quickly, When we are angry, our actions and words often cause pain or heartache, especially for people we love or close to us.
The Bible itself contains several verses about anger, and all of them prevent us from sinning when we are angry. So what to do when we are angry? One thing we can do while being angry is to give ourselves a ‘time out’. When having time out, we can control our emotions. The first simplest and fastest way is to inhale and exhale deeply for at least 10 seconds before saying anything. if the situation allows, take longer ‘time out’. Leave the room, and do things that make us calm like drinking a glass of water, eating, even sleeping.
Most importantly, during time out, pray. Pray for ourselves, pray for people who make us angry, pray for the situation. Our prayer is not asking God to change the people who make us angry, but rather to focus on our own heart, to enable us to get rid of our anger, to give us wisdom, patience, love, and to forgive. When we are calm, we can judge the situation with a clearer mind. There are times that after time out, what causes our anger doesn’t seem to matter anymore. If we have to reprimand or discipline, then our words and actions will be more positive and constructive since we will not be controlled by emotions. [EH]
